Stage 2
Lesson Number: 8/10
Lesson Topic: Creating a Practice Wiki
Learning Area(s): Creative Arts
Unit Aim or Outcome:
The unit aims for students to develop a deep understanding and knowledge of how the various techniques that artists use provide numerous opportunities for a wide variety of interpretations by viewers. In addition, students will develop confidence in utilising visual and written grammar to portray meaning and gain an understanding of how the selected subject matter can represent different interpretations.
Lesson Outcome:
- Build knowledge of Wiki use and develop computer skills
- Build knowledge of a variety of multi-modal texts, written and visual grammar.
Resources:
- Wiki webpage – myfirstschoolwiki. All computers will be prepared and opened to this page prior to lesson.
- Computers for each child/access to computer lab or library where computers are. Computers will be switched on and ready for student use prior to lesson. Depending on computer availability students will work in pairs or alone.
Lesson Outline
Prior knowledge: Students will have developed content knowledge through the careful lesson sequencing of this unit. The Science and Technology Syllabus Outcomes and Indicators state that students in Stage 2 are working towards or are working at a level at which they are able to (IC S2.2) ‘create and evaluate information products demonstrating an understanding of the needs of particular audiences’. Therefore this lesson is based around the understanding that students will have prior knowledge of computer use, with extra scaffolding for those students who are unsure/have little experience with computer use.

Introduction:
- Ask students if they know what a Wiki page is. Discuss with them what Wiki’s can be used for (information pages, class learning pages for e.g.). Explain that we will be creating a practice Wiki today so we can get used to the different features on Wikispaces.

- Explain that we will be using some resources from our previous Insects and Dragons lessons to decorate our pages. Students are to take into consideration their knowledge of visual and written grammar when considering placement of objects/choice of pictures/text on their Wiki page.

- Bring up the pre-prepared Wiki page with a few pictures inserted around text.

- Questions about the Wiki page: Have I positioned my images and text in the Wiki page in a way that allows the viewer to consider the story the images are telling? Are there any strong lines in the pictures? What does this mean? Do the pictures convey an idea or are they just showing a simple image? What information are the pictures showing? What types of images are on the Wiki page (diagrams, photos, etc..)? How is the page set out? What can you see on the screen? What part of the screen catches you eye? Why?

- Tell students they need to consider these things when creating their own practice page and the class Wiki page in the next lessons.
Teaching strategy/Learning Activity:
Students will ……
Teacher will…
- Follow teacher instructions on opening a new page.
- Type in a name for their page. Create.
- Follow teacher instructions on adding a title and text to the page. Use imagination to come up with an exciting title that will highlight what the page is about.
- Add bold, underline and italics to the text and change the colour and style.
- Add bullet/1.2.3 points somewhere on the page.
- Follow teacher instructions on adding a hyperlink, an image and a widget.
- Students will position the above images, etc. on their page using their knowledge of visual grammar to ensure that they are positioned well and catch the viewers eye.
- Explain that the Wiki page for the class Wiki is already opened on students’ computers.
- Show students how to open a new page and ask them to think of a name for their page. Must be relevant to Insects and Dragons i.e. Insectopia.
- Show students how to add a title for the page, and to think of some text to add. For example, Welcome to my page about Insects and Dragons, please explore at your peril.
- Show students how to use Bold, Underline and Italics, and how to change the colour and style of text.
- Tell students to add either 1. 2. 3. or bullet points somewhere in their page.
- Show students how to add a hyperlink (have a list of pre-prepared web pages on insects and dragons for them to choose from).
- Show students how to insert an image (students will be directed to their saved scanned poems at this point).
- Show students how to embed a widget (have a list of pre-prepared images from Teacher Tube or other that are suitable for this class/content).
Concluding strategy:
- Ask students to save their Wiki pages and turn their computers off. Show them how.
- Bring students to the floor at front of class.
- Ask students what they found out in today’s lesson? Did they enjoy it? What did they have difficulty with? What was easy for them? Can they imagine using a Wiki outside of school? Why/why not?
- Explain that in the next few lessons we will be developing a class Wiki about Insects and Dragons to show to another class. Do they have any ideas on what we might put in the book? How might we go about it? Ask them to consider ideas as homework and to bring their ideas with them in the next lesson.
Assessment:
- Students’ discussion in the introduction and conclusion will form both diagnostic and formative assessment. The introductory discussion will allow the teacher to develop an understanding of students’ knowledge and abilities on the computer and will inform the lesson. The concluding discussion will inform the Rich Task Lessons and may lead to it being modified to suit all students.
- Students’ Wiki pages will be assessed by the teacher as a form of summative assessment. Teacher will read each students Wiki page and ensure they have followed, completed and understood the steps of the lesson.
Any special considerations or contingency plans:
- Some students may be placed together to work in pairs depending on their abilities/confidence in using a computer.
- Teacher may work one-on-one with students throughout the lesson once she/he has explained each step to the students and demonstrated on the Overhead Computer what they are to do. This will ensure that all students are able to keep up with the lesson and not miss out on any steps.
Self-reflection
- Have I considered the needs of the students when preparing this lesson?
- Are the students understanding the lesson focus through achieving the stated outcomes?
- Do I need to change the way I am approaching this lesson? Is there too much content for the students to get through?
- Have I provided sufficient time for the majority of students to finish the learning activity?
- Did I have realistic expectations for student behaviour?
- Have I included enough questions that will engage and enhance student learning?
